TODAY @ 2PM: Hearing on Addressing Migration Push Factors
(WASHINGTON) – Today at 2pm, the Subcommittee on Oversight, Management & Accountability, chaired by Rep. Lou Correa (D-CA), will hold a virtual hearing to examine the ‘push’ factors influencing migration from Central America to the U.S. and potential solutions to address these factors to better manage irregular migration to the southern border.
Widespread violence, political unrest, and high levels of poverty and inequality—factors beyond the control of the White House–have been key drivers of migration from Central America since 2014. Drastic cuts in aid made by the previous Administration, the COVID-19 pandemic, and multiple natural disasters have been more recent factors. Though progress can’t be made overnight, the Biden Administration has pledged $422 million in humanitarian relief and proposed a four-year, $4 billion plan to address the root causes of migration in the region.
